Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis.
Prerequisites	None
Learning Outcomes	Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes. Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution. Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose. Use Edited American English in MLA formatted academic essays.
Core Objectives	Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral, and visual communication. Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points on view.

Lecture Topics Outline	We will discuss and compose four academic essays this semester: Narrative, Descriptive, Compare/Contrast, and Argumentation/Persuasion. Each essay will have four phases: Topic, Outline, Rough Draft, and Final Draft. Each stage of the writing process will be approved and graded by me, so you must have my approval of each phase before you can move on to the next one. You may be asked to revise and resubmit your topic, outline, and rough draft more than once before I approve of them, which is my way of setting you up for success in the essay. We will also have some other small assignments, such as grammar and writing exercises, but the main focus of the semester will be on those four essays.
Major Assignments Schedule	***Students need to note that in my mini-session, every day there will be an assignment due, including weekends. We have only 2 weeks of class time with the winter break in the middle, so every single day you have at least one assignment due ranging from topic submissions to outlines to drafts of essays. We have 4 essays to get through in just two weeks, so each day will be packed with assignments, emails, discussion boards, consistent communication between me and you through Blackboard, and you will be asked to revise and resubmit work more than once in a day in order to move on to the next phase of each essay. I am a very hands on instructor, and we have a good bit of work to get through in a short time. I will post a daily assignment schedule in our Blackboard.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	All of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. ***Plagiarism policy will strictly enforced: a first offense will result in a 0 for the assignment, and the second offense will result in failing the class. Ignorance is not a defense. A Plagiarism Contract will be posted in class and virtually acknowledged by each student who verifies he/she understands exactly what plagiarism is and the consequences if it is committed. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with as such. Due to the nature of this mini-course, I will not accept any late work! We simply do not have time to delay.
Attendance Policy	Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three unexcused absences will receive an academic penalty in the form of a grade reduction. Excessive tardiness will, likewise, have an effect on your grade. As an online course, your "attendance" will be noted by your log in access dates on Blackboard, which can be seen by the instructor. Additionally, I will be providing weekly discussion posts in which a student must respond in order to be counted "present" and "participating" in the class. Your attendance and participation in my course counts for 5% of your overall grade, and I will be deducting points for lack of participation in our group discussions.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

Other	I will be grading your essays using a ten category 1301 Essay Grading Rubric, which I will provide for you at the beginning of the semester. I will be posting your grades on Blackboard for you to access at any point throughout the semester. If you would like to meet with me about your grade, then you will need to schedule an appointment with me. ***Communication is key. I receive emails directly to my phone, and I am quick to respond. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns at any point in the semester, please feel free to reach out to me. There is no need for you to go through the semester with any unanswered questions or unaddressed issues.
